Why it’s important to choose natural baby skincare
Your baby’s skin is so delicate, and as their sensitive immune system is developing, it’s important not to overwhelm them with heavy creams, fragrances or synthetic ingredients. That’s why it’s best to only choose products that are specially formulated for use on your baby’s skin.
As well as being beautifully soft and smooth, infant skin is much thinner than adult skin, and can take up to 12 months to develop its protective barrier , meaning your baby’s skin absorbs what you put on it more easily than your own skin! And their immature immune systems can’t process and remove harmful chemicals as easily as an adult’s can.
So to safeguard your child’s tender skin, look for products that are natural, preferably certified organic, and contain ingredients that are gentle on their skin.
Two ingredients that are especially nurturing for your child’s delicate skin are avocado and coconut oil. And here’s why:
5 benefits of certified organic avocado and coconut oils
1. They’re packed full of vitamins and nutrients:
Avocado oil contains antioxidant vitamins A, C and E to nourish, protect and soothe skin against itching and dryness. Coconut oil also contains vitamin E. Both are rich in healthy fats, which help retain skin moisture.
2. Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties:
The oleic acid in avocado oil can help soothe irritated skin and protect against skin dryness and cracking, as can the vitamin E in both oils. The lauric acid in coconut oil has been shown to protect skin from certain microbial infections, which may help provide relief from some skin irritations, like eczema .
3. Both oils provide a protective moisture barrier:
Avocado oil penetrates into skin deeper than other oils, helping retain moisture in skin for longer . And coconut oil contains healthy medium chain fatty acids that also provide a protective barrier on your baby’s skin, making it ideal to soothe the irritated skin of nappy rash (diaper rash). Coconut oil’s moisture retaining properties have been scientifically proven in a 2015 Indian study, which showed massaging preterm newborns with coconut oil safely and naturally reduced their skin’s trans-epidermal water loss .
4. Keeps hair healthy:
The vitamins, proteins and fatty acids in both avocado and coconut oils help keep your baby’s hair smooth and soft, as well as soothing any scalp irritation, including cradle cap. Coconut oil is also beneficial to moisturise your baby’s hair if it becomes dry.
Babies love to be cuddled, held and massaged – and the sense of touch is so powerful. Using gentle, natural skin-healthy oils to massage your baby helps nourish their skin while strengthening the bond between you.
Why are certified organic ingredients better?
Your baby goes through many changes in their first year, growing and learning, while their bodies adapt to the world. And their fragile immune system is sensitive to whatever they eat and take in through their skin. So it makes sense to lighten the load by using skincare that’s as natural as possible. Certified organic ingredients give you the reassurance of purity – from raw ingredient to end product – and they tend to be less irritable to delicate skin. But remember, every baby is unique, so always patch test a product before using on your baby’s skin.
